Gervonta Davis’ hair braider is speaking out after the boxer claimed hair grease running into his eyes caused him to voluntarily take a knee during his highly anticipated fight against WBA super featherweight boxer Lamont Roach Jr.
On March 2, Davis’ hair stylist, identified as @leebthebrand on TikTok and Instagram, took to social media to set the record straight after Davis said grease dripping from his braids caused him to take a brief knee after being jabbed by Lamont during the March 1 fight. As noted by Boxing Worldwide, the move could have cost him the entire match as voluntary knees are often counted as knockouts.
Gervante Davis Grease Is The Culprit
According to a screenshot obtained by The Neighborhood Talk, the Bronx-based hairdresser claimed that she did not use excessive grease to create and style the cornrows that the athlete donned during Saturday’s match.
“I did his hair WEDNESDAY, It’s SATURDAY! He did press, gym and weight in,” @leebthebrand penned, while clapping back at Davis’ claim that she did his hair “two days ago.”
The hairstylist added, “That’s not N excuse, how much grease did I use damn.”
On her Instagram story, the hairdresser took it a step further, poking fun at Davis’ comment.
“The grease in the room with us?” she captioned a photo of herself sitting in a salon along with two laughing emojis.
She also shared a photo of the grease in question, which appeared to be PureO Natural’s NeatBraid Conditional Shining Gel.
While some social media users laughed along with the hairstylist, a few criticized her for clowning Davis.
“Girl you was supposed to have his back tf ! Over some grease, chile,” wrote one user in the comments section of The Neighborhood Talk.
Another person penned, “I wouldn’t have even responded! He actually didn’t say anything bad, didn’t call her name or business, and somewhat told the truth! Now you probably lost a good client!”
Roach said he should have won the fight.
According to ESPN, during the ninth round of the intense fight on March 1 at Barclays Center in New York, Davis, 30, momentarily stumbled while grappling with Roach, briefly taking a knee in the ring. However, he quickly bounced back up, heading over to his trainer to wipe his face. The fight ended in a majority draw, with one judge scoring it 115-113 in favor of Davis, while the other two scored it 114-114.
During a press conference, Roach expressed doubt about Davis’ excuse, calling it nonsense. He argued that he deserved to win the fight, insisting that referee Steve Wilkes should have counted Davis’ knee as a knockout.
“The rules do state if you voluntarily take the knee, then that’s an automatic count,” Roach said, according to ESPN. “But it is what it is. I wasn’t relying on that. I was relying on what I was doing in there. I think I was taking control, I think I was landing more shots, I think I was landing more power shots. I thought I was doing my thing. But if that was counted as a knockdown, I would win the majority decision.”
Welterweight champ, Terence Crawford, also claimed that Roach was “robbed” of a victory on Saturday.
What do you think? Was Gervonta Davis’ hair stylist in the wrong or is his excuse B.S.?
