Is My Hamster Dead Or Is It Hibernating?

Is your hamster cold and not moving? Are you worried it could be dead? Well, we are here to ease your mind and possibly even save your hamsters life.

Yes, your domestic hamster could be hibernating but it could as be in a state of Torpor. Let us explain.

True hibernation

Some species of hamsters, like the European hamster, hibernate for long periods during the winter. They become fat in the summer to prepare for hibernation.

Torpor

Other species of hamsters, like Syrian and dwarf hamsters, may enter a state called torpor when conditions are poor. Torpor is similar to hibernation, where your hamster will have a decreased body temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, and reduced activity. Torpor is usually triggered by low temperatures, short days, or food scarcity. It’s a survival tactic that only lasts a few hours or days.

Although, if you are living in a normal living house and you have a domesticated hamster, they rarely hibernate because they no longer need to adapt to changing environments like their wild counterparts.
So with that information we hope we have helped.
What are some ways to prevent your hamster from hibernating:
  • Keep your home’s temperature between 65–75°F
  • Provide plenty of food, water, and clean bedding
  • Make sure your hamster gets some sun
  • Block drafts near your hamster’s house

If your hamster’s energy level changes, you should consult a veterinarian. A change in behavior, like sleeping more or being less active, could be a sign of illness also.
