First Generation Nigerian-American Sitcom Coming To TV
With the number of Black faces on TV steadily rising, a new sitcom pilot, “First Gen” highlights the “everyday Nigerian-American family.” Totally cool. The sitcom will explore the dynamic between Nigerian parents and their first generation children.
“An interesting shift is occurring where kids of immigrant parents are growing up and discovering America for themselves; not solely through the lens of their parents,” Yvonne Orji, star and writer of the show told Shadow & Act. “This opens up a whole new world of opportunities. Until First Gen, we haven’t seen Africans portrayed in mainstream media as regular, everyday people. They’re usually warlords, cab drivers or fleeing genocide. The African immigrant story in America is so much richer than that. The success of entertainers like Lupita Nyong’o David Oyelowo, and Uzo Aduba suggests that mainstream America is ready to tune into a series like First Gen.”
We’re so here for it.

iROKOtv has reached a deal with Netflix to launch a section dedicated to the African experience.
The deal was reportedly reached last December and according to iROKOtv CEO Jason Njoku, it’s a very big deal.
“Obviously with 57m subscribers globally, working with Netflix is a great first step to widening or at least improving the visibility of Nollywood. Which again is super important to us at iRoko.”
iROKOtv recently partnered with StarTimes and will to launch two linear channels on the payTV platform.
Netflix is the home of original series House of Cards, Orange is the New Black and the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Netflix featured the African film October 1 and will soon feature a wide variety of African content.
This is huge for the African film community. We can’t wait to see the new content.

It seems like the Tamar and Toni are finally on board with a sister album. But as usual the Braxton sisters are having a little trouble with agreeing on the direction of the project. Will this album ever get made? If we’re judging based on the trailer, don’t count on it!
But I guess we’ll lust have to find out.
